Pauly the Polar Bear

Pauly the Polar Bear

The last series of my work is primarily figurative, and explore the figure and animal world.
The animal series is an intimate portrait of animals on the brink of extinction. (Polar Bear, Gorilla and Tiger)
It depicts their emotions through pop-infused colour palette. The subjects appear almost human, expressing emotions and facial expression – each of them have a name, a DNA.
I usually collect photos of animals from the web, but I also shoot animals in zoos or during my travels.
I used different type of palette knives to give a rough texture, like Vincent van Gogh used his palette knife painting to capture and convey raw emotion. I then employed drip painting using a paint brush to, in this case, illustrate the extinction. The absence of words, context, environment make the subject in front of the audience. It creates this emotional connection with the audience.
